Methods of dump

Many people would like to have their Amiga disks as ADF on their PC, for use with an emulator.
The problem is : what method can they use for that ?

Well, it depends on wich hardware is available.

I only own a PC.

The cheapest way is the use of the program Disk2FDI.
Plug a second floppy drive in your PC (it can be DD, HD, 3.5 i or 5.25), and this software will force a reading of an Amiga disk and will transfer its content in an ADF file on your hard drive.

Advantages

Simple of use
Works with standard hardware

Disadvantages

Needs a free 3.5'' bay in the PC
Needs a free power plug for the second floppy drive (All power supplies don't have it)
All Amiga disks can't be read
Can't write an Amiga disk
The software can't work under Windows NT technologies (NT/2k/XP)

I've got an Amiga with Kickstart 1.3 or 1.2, without hard drive, with its 1.x system disks and ... a PC.

You can use the two methods described ont this site to link the Amiga with the PC.
If you only want to make ADFs for your emulator, you can use the Disk2FDI method, too.

Advantages

You'll be able to transfer the ADF of ADFDump on a real Amiga disk, then the dump will be automated
Then, with ADFDump, you'll be able to transfer any ADF on a real Amiga disk, as all softwares aren't emulated correctly yet

Disadvantages

Transferring ADFDump can be not so handy for a person without experience with computers
Needs a null-modem serial cable : build or buy one if you don't have it
If you have no system disk, you'll have to receive ADFDump by normal mail

I've got an Amiga with Kickstart 2.0 or more, without hard drive, with its system disks and ... a PC.

Workbench disks 2.1 and more can read PC 720 Kb floppies
Just mount the PC0: device, which is the first physical floppy drive of the Amiga, and you'll be able to read, write and format 720 Kb MSDOS floppies.
To build one, just fill in the HD gap of a 1.44 Mb disk with an adhesive tape.
This way, you'll be able to transfer utilities from the PC to the Amiga, for example Transwarp, which will allow you to transfer ADFDump on a real Amiga disk.
Then, ADFDump will automate ADF load/unload.
If you only want to make ADFs for your emulator, you can use the Disk2FDI method, too.

Advantages

You can transfer the ADF of ADFDump without null-modem serial cable, but with a PC 720 Kb disk

Disadvantages

You can't use any of the methods described on this site
Owners of Workbench 2.0 or 2.04 will be blocked (see below)
If you have no system disk, you'll have to receive ADFDump by normal mail

"What if I have a Mac instead of a PC ?"

Sorry... I don't know enough Macintosh to help you. However, these methods for PC must have their equivalent on Mac.
"If my Amiga has a Kickstart 1.0 or 1.1 ?"
I don't know. You can try the second method, but I'm afraid ADFDump won't work with these Kickstarts.
You'll have to load/unload your ADFs by hand.
"I have an Amiga with Kickstart 2.0 or more, but I also have a 1.3 Workbench disk!"
You're lucky : the second method can work for you.
"My Amiga has a kickstart 2.0 or more, but I only have the 2.0 or 2.04 Workbench disks"
Sorry... Those disk can't read PC floppies, and you can't use the method described on this site.
Are you sure you don't have a non-system disk with workbench 1.3 and the 'type' command available ? If yes, the second method will work.
If you have a BASIC on a floppy, you can try the first method.
If not, i'm afraid you'll have to ADFDump by normal mail.
